Director
Melton Centre |
The
Florence Melton Adult Mini-School is a flagship program of the
Melton
Centre and serves as a paradigm for our role in
Jewish education worldwide.
The goals,
principles and values that underlie the Mini-School project
are rooted in a conceptual base that is informed and shaped
by a larger conceptual theory of Jewish and general education.
This theory draws upon a rich literature of ideas gleaned
from the fields of Adult Learning, Identity Construction,
Hermeneutics and Cultural Literacy.
The Melton
Centre for Jewish Education represents the deep commitment
of the Hebrew University to the study and improvement of Jewish
education. Established in 1968, the Centre is dedicated to
exploring the complex and pressing issues that face Jewish
life in the contemporary world.
The Melton
Centre boasts the largest faculty and graduate student body
of academic institutions of its kind. Drawing on the unique
resources of the Hebrew University, the Centre strives to
bridge the gap between theory and practice in an academic
and pluralistic setting.
The activities
of the Melton Centre can be divided into three main areas
of concern: a) Research and Teaching; b) Training Programs
for Educators; and c) Educational Projects in the Field. Each
of these areas expresses the Centre's dual commitment to excellence
in theory and impacting the field. In this sense the Mini-School
continues to play a critical role in the evolving mission
that the Melton Centre seeks to fulfill worldwide.
We welcome
the opportunity to greet you personally at the Melton Centre
in Jerusalem, and look forward to exploring together additional
ways to further our joint goals.
My
best wishes,
Dr. Howard
